On July 13, the research team of Tokyo University's Dr. Takao Someya along with Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) announced their success in manufacturing a thin and elastic full-color skin display that evolves their original elastic hybrid electronic mounting technology, as well as a display device with an integrated drive/communication circuit and power supply. The skin-attachable display can show messages sent from the outside.
Means of communication are crucial in a coronavirus/post-coronavirus society, where people are distanced from one another. In a state where people cannot directly meet or touch each other, society is currently lacking a means of nonverbal communication that shows changes in complexion and the like. In the future, society will need the means to supplement these processes.
In light of this situation, the said groups hope to make people feel closer to one another and is thus developing skins sensors and displays as technologies that allow information to be viewed and sensed near one’s body surface. The research also helps in transmitting information, such as sending support messages in a brand-new form.
In the said research, the choices for parts that can be used with stretchable hybrid electronic mounting technology capable of following curved surface shapes have been expanded, giving rise to prospects for practical application. As a demonstration of the research, the said groups succeeded in creating a full-color display capable of enhancing the expressive power of skin-attachable displays.
The full-color skin display has improved wiring reliability, along with an integrated drive/communication circuit and power supply. It can also be attached to all sorts of things.
